A Must-Have for Smile Protection

At Poinsett Dental Associates, we offer high quality, custom athletic mouthguards. This critical piece of protective equipment should be worn during all sports that could result in an injury to the mouth, including football, hockey, basketball and soccer. Our dentists also provide custom mouthguards for teeth grinding, which are highly effective at minimizing the damaging forces of bruxism.

How Do Mouthguards Work?

Mouthguards fit securely over the entire arch of upper teeth to protect against sports injuries. Not only do mouthguards keep teeth safe, they also act as a buffer between the teeth and the tongue, lips and cheeks, preventing soft tissue damage as well.

If you clench and grind your teeth during sleep (bruxism), a mouthguard, or nightguard, will be helpful. The appliance cushions the teeth from grinding forces to ward off chipped, fractured and worn teeth and a sore jaw.

Why Should You Wear a Mouthguard When Playing Sports?

It’s important for kids, teens and adults to use a mouthguard while playing any sport that could result in a blow to the face, whether a mouthguard is required or not. It’s the easiest, most affordable way to keep the teeth, jaws and gums safe.

Mouthguards Reduce the Risk of:

  • Chipped or fractured teeth
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Cheek lesions
  • Lip lacerations
  • Tongue lacerations
  • Gum and soft tissue injuries
  • Jawbone fractures

What are the Different Types of Mouthguards?

There are several different types of mouthguards with varying levels of effectiveness. To find out which kind is right for you or your child, schedule a visit with a Greer, SC dentist today! Options include:

Stock Mouthguards

Stock mouthguards are universal versions meant to fit all mouths. While they can be purchased and worn immediately, they tend to be uncomfortable and offer the least amount of protection.

Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards

These mouthguards are placed in boiling water to make them pliable. Once heated, you put the guard in your mouth and press it against the teeth to mold it to your smile. Boil-and-bite guards are preferable to stock ones.

Custom Mouthguards

A custom-fit mouthguard is created specifically for you by your dentist. It will fit your teeth, bite and jaw perfectly for better comfort and the highest level of protection. The guard can even be designed to fit over braces.
